MEData — A Smarter, Human-Centered Evaluation Platform
In the fast-paced environment of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center’s emergency department, performance evaluations for medical residents were disjointed and inefficient. Feedback was often delayed, buried in spreadsheets or clunky systems, making it difficult for faculty to assess, for residents to track growth, and for directors to oversee development in real time. The existing tools failed to support the urgency and complexity of emergency medicine.
Project Goal: To design and develop an interactive application that simplifies performance tracking for medical residents while addressing the specific needs of all user groups in the emergency department.
Solution Overview: MEData is a custom-built digital platform that translates complex performance metrics into clear, actionable visual insights. The design focuses on three core principles: simplicity, clarity, and human-centered utility.
KEY FEATURES:
Role-based Dashboards: Tailored interfaces for residents, faculty, nurses, scribes, and directors to ensure relevant information is front and center.
Real-time Performance Tracking: Up-to-date visual data allows residents to monitor growth and faculty to provide feedback on the fly.
Clean, Minimal UI: Prioritizing ease of use, the interface reduces cognitive load and supports fast, intuitive navigation—vital in an emergency setting.
Smart Data Visualization: Charts and graphs are designed to highlight trends, progress, and outliers without overwhelming the user.
Mobile-Responsive Design: Ensures accessibility and usability across multiple devices, from desktops to tablets in the ER.
IMPACT:
Improved Feedback Loops: Faculty reported increased ease in submitting evaluations promptly, reducing delays.
Resident Engagement: Residents felt more empowered by having visibility into their strengths and areas for improvement.
Administrative Efficiency: Directors and coordinators found it easier to track program-wide performance, enabling data-driven mentorship and decision-making.
